| Bay Area Parent Editor Peggy Spear was awarded a gold medal for her monthly editor’s columns in the San Francisco/Peninsula and East Bay editions. The judges called Spear’s writing “fresh” and her columns “a great read.” They added: “The writer takes her subjects – the benefits of pet ownership and nightmares – but not herself, seriously in this pair of laugh-out-loud columns. In the ‘Bump in the Night’ column, she exposes the lurking fear that many parents, no doubt, can identify with. In the other column, she introduces us to her family of dogs and their unique qualities.” |

| Bay Area Parent's twice yearly b.a.b.y. special issue also received a gold award for the Fall 2008 cover, photographed by Monica Michelle and designed by senior graphic designer Amanda Hawkins. "In a genre oft en dominated by pictures of babies, the Bay Area Parent company wisely went with a pregnant model to illustrate 'Pregnancy Do's & Don'ts,'" the judges said. "That unifies the photo and the words. Att ractive use of colors." |
| Bay Area Parent's semi-annual Teen Focus edition from spring 2008 was awarded a bronze medal for general excellence for a supplemental publication. It was edited by Spear and designed by Hawkins. "Some great trendy stories, such as the celebrities teens follow (Ellen Page) to what they're reading (Twilight), make this publication fun to read," the judges said. "It is also illustrated nicely with photos and Internet screen shots. Good job with breakouts and graphics makes this an easy and interesting publication for all ages." |
| The cover of our annual Best of the Best issue, also photographed by Michelle and designed by Hawkins, was given a bronze award. "The hairdo, the tuxedo and the Oscar all support the theme tease line, 'Family Favorite Winners.' This cover is informative and entertaining," the judges said. |
