If you’re new to the area and need to know whom to talk to about trash pick-up, water connections, utilities, cable and all the other odds and ends that come with moving, here’s a short list of helpful numbers.
City & County Services
• Alameda County. County Administrator, 1221 Oak St., Rm. 555, Oakland; 510-272-6984; www.acgov.org. Visit the Web site for a number of online services including obtaining marriage certificates, paying traffic tickets, jury reporting instructions, DMV appointments and BART tickets.
• City of San Francisco City Hall. 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, San Francisco; 415-554-4000; www.sfgov.org. Visit the Web site for an overview of city services and their appropriate phone numbers. From the site you can learn how to register to vote, discover the city's many parks and recreation opportunities, read about the history of the city and pay online for a number of services, including dog licensing and birth certificate orders.
• Contra Costa County. County Administration Building, 651 Pine St., 11th Fl., Martinez; 925-335-1080; www.co.contra-costa.ca.us. The county's Web site offers a number of online services including animals for adoption, county recycling guide, ask a librarian a question and crime statistics.
• County of Marin. 3501 Civic Center Dr., San Rafael; 415-499-7000; www.co.marin.ca.us. The civic center's myriad departments include: the main branch of the county library, courts, health and human services, the sheriff's office and cultural services.
• County of San Mateo. 400 County Center, Redwood City; 650-363-4000; www.co.sanmateo.ca.us. Visit the Web site to find information for job seekers, child support services, the sheriff's office and health services.
Utilities
Also check with your city's government because many cities have their own public works departments.
• Alameda County Water District (ACWD). Fremont; 510-668-4299; www.acwd.org. Provides a reliable supply of high-quality water to Fremont, Newark and Union City.
• Contra Costa Water District (CCWD). 1331 Concord Ave., Concord; 925-688- 8000; www.ccwater.com. Delivers safe, clean water to approximately 500,000 people in central and eastern Contra Costa County.
• County of San Mateo Department of Public Works. 555 County Center, 5th Fl., Redwood City; 650-363-4100; www.co.sanmateo.ca.us. Oversees flood control, lighting districts, sewer services, water services, waste management and RecycleWorks.
• East Bay Municipal Utility District. 375 11th St., Oakland; 866-403-2683; www.ebmud.com. Provides water, wastewater treatment and recreational facilities in parts of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
• Norcal Waste Systems. 160 Pacific Ave., Ste. 200, San Francisco; 800-652- 1275; www.norcalwaste.com. The parent to companies providing all facets of solid waste management . Collection, recycling, transfer and landfill operations. Go online to view a complete list of all their companies, including Norcal Waste Systems of San Mateo County, SF Recycling & Disposal and Golden Gate Disposal & Recycling.
• Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E). 800-743-5000; www.pge.com. One of the largest combination natural gas and electric utilities in the United States that serves more than 15 million residents in northern and central California.

This department of the city and county of San Francisco provides water, wastewater and municipal power services to San Francisco, as well as water to 1.6 million customers within three Bay Area counties.
